The iconic shores of Sydney’s Bondi Beach became a scene of terror Sunday evening after a mass shooting left at least ten people dead.
Footage shows panicked crowds fleeing the scene after hearing the sound of gunfire. Police said nine victims were killed, along with one suspected attacker. At least 18 others were wounded.
The gunfire erupted near Campbell Parade at about 18:45 local time, as thousands gathered for the Chanukah by the Sea festival. Witnesses described rapid gunshots, screaming crowds and people running for cover across the beachfront.
New South Wales Police said the immediate threat was neutralised after a large-scale response involving more than 25 emergency units. One alleged gunman was shot dead during the operation. A second suspected shooter was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Police confirmed two people are now in custody and warned the public to avoid the area. Specialist teams are examining suspicious items found nearby amid reports of a possible improvised explosive device.
The attack unfolded during a Jewish community celebration marking the first night of Hanukkah. Community leaders described the timing and location as deliberate and targeted.
Among the injured are two responding police officers and a senior media official from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the scenes were 'shocking and distressing'.
Meanwhile, Israeli President Isaac Herzog condemned what he called a 'cruel attack by vile terrorists' and urged Canberra to "fight against the enormous wave of anti-Semitism which is plaguing Australian society."
