The third round of U.S.-brokered peace talks between Russia and Ukraine has ended in Geneva without a breakthrough — and both sides are describing the negotiations as “very tense.”

The talks, mediated by the United States and led by envoy Steve Witkoff, lasted eight hours over two days. While Witkoff claimed “meaningful progress,” Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky and Ukrainian intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov acknowledged that the two countries remain deeply divided.

The core issues remain unchanged:

• Russia demands Ukraine formally cede occupied territory, including Crimea and parts of the Donbas.
• Ukraine refuses to surrender sovereignty and seeks strong Western security guarantees.
• Moscow opposes Ukraine joining NATO or hosting Western forces.

As diplomats met in Switzerland, Russia launched one of its largest aerial assaults of the war — firing nearly 400 drones and dozens of missiles at Ukrainian cities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow of deliberately targeting energy infrastructure during freezing winter temperatures.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has publicly urged Ukraine to “come to the table fast,” raising concerns in Kyiv and across Europe that pressure is being placed disproportionately on the country that was invaded.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other European leaders remain deeply involved, warning that any deal must not reward territorial conquest by force.

With the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion approaching on February 24th, the gap between Moscow and Kyiv remains wide — and analysts warn that Russian President Vladimir Putin may be using negotiations to buy time for a new spring offensive.
