Italian city anticipates supervolcano eruption amid earthquake. More than a thousand earthquakes have rocked the area around the Campi Flegrei volcano in Italy recently. And this has sparked concerns that a super volcano will erupt after being dormant for almost 500 years.


The government is considering the possibility of mass evacuation of thousands of people living in the area. The Campi Flegrei volcanic area is also called the Phlegraen Fields, which comes from the ancient Greek word meaning burning.


The area today looks unreal thanks to the sulfur fumes from the surface and attracts tourists. Even though residents are used to the smell and smoke, they are worried about the number of earthquakes that occur. Most of them are still minors.


However, there was an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, which was the strongest earthquake to shake the area in more than 40 years. Scientists fear a so-called 'seismic crisis' is brewing. If this really happens, it would be the first such phenomenon since the early 1980s.
