In 1962, at the age of 28, Nancy Evans Bush faced a traumatic near-death experience (NDE) during labor. She encountered beings who delivered a chilling message that shook her very sense of existence: "You are not real, you were never real, and you will never be real." Although this event shattered her worldview, it ultimately led her to study similar cases and coin the term “distressing near-death experiences,” dedicating the rest of her life to researching and understanding this phenomenon. In 1982, she became the first Executive Director of the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), and ten years later, she co-wrote with Dr. Bruce Greyson the first peer-reviewed study on distressing NDEs, published in the Journal of Psychiatry.
