In 2023 The British Racing School celebrates its 40th anniversary as a world class centre of excellence in the horse racing industry, having been officially opened by His Majesty King Charles III on 23rd November 1983. Over the past four decades it has trained thousands of people and equipped them with the skills to excel in Britain’s second biggest spectator sport, horse racing. To date, some 4,000 young people have successfully completed the course and gone onto to work in the industry including many of the world’s top jockeys and every British Champion Apprentice Jockey from the past ten years.

In celebration of this special milestone, we were generously supported by Ascot Racecourse Supports and Clare Balding to create this feature film, showcasing the vital work we do to give life-changing opportunities to young people and providing a home to over 70 ex-racehorses, making us home to more retired racehorses than anywhere else in the UK.

How does The British Racing School support young people?

The British Racing School improves social mobility for young people aged 8-25, by using their interest in horses to unlock education, training and employment opportunities which may otherwise have felt inaccessible to them. We create pathways for over 500 young people every year to participate in the sport of British horseracing. We empower young people to achieve their educational and employment potential by providing them with:

Outstanding industry education. We teach young people all the practical skills and theoretical knowledge they need to know to gain employment and progress their careers in the horse racing industry. In addition to industry education, our young people are supported to improve their English and Maths by dedicated tutors throughout their time with us.

Skills for life. Our residential courses equip young people for living independently such as cooking, cleaning, healthy eating and budgeting.

Skills for work. We get young people ready for the world of work through simulating a real racing yard working environment, mirroring the jobs they will do and the hours they will work. We provide CV writing, mock interviews, visits to racing yards, the races and guest speakers from the industry.

Soft Skills. Through dedicated pastoral care and using their passion for caring for horses as a vehicle, our young people are supported to increase their personal development in areas such as confidence, self-esteem, teamwork and resilience.

Opportunity. 98% of our young people go on to secure sustained employment as a result of our support. We work in partnership with employers throughout the UK to provide apprenticeships and BRS staff continue to support them once they have entered the workplace.

As well as a wide range of programmes for young people, we also run a comprehensive set of other training courses for existing professionals within the industry, jockey training & development, pony racing camps, Foundation Degrees and many more.
