Travel back to the skies over France in 1944 with original silent gun-camera footage (soundtrack added) shot by pilots of the 406th Fighter Squadron, 371st Fighter Group, with footage primarily coming from fighters in the famed Operation Overlord.
From my research, pilots of the 371st flew P-47 Thunderbolts in attacks on coastal gun positions and supply columns as the invasion beaches opened, then continued the fight inland. Has daytime and nighttime runs with tracers.
Reel starts with a clip from May with no. 1996, then follows with 1989, 1993, 1997, 2004, and 2010 from D-Day itself on June 6, 1944, and remaining follow-up operations.
Scenes include pre-invasion rail strikes in May, attacks on coastal defenses during D-Day, follow-up across Normandy in June, and August as the Allies pushed toward Paris.
Film was a rather low quality positive made print made during the war- contrast, detail are lacking, and edge bleeding/glow was very significant. I edited each scene independently to improve the viewing experience as much as possible, however so much of the film just has so little contrast.
A clip made it in twice around 5:30 (film 2887/2888) - many duplicate clips were originally in this reel and totally out of order, so I'm not sure which exactly is the correct title?
Film also had shrunken and developed vinegar syndrome.
