Seleucus III Keraunos, son of Seleucus II Callinicus, ruled the Seleucid Empire from 225-222 BC. Inheriting an empire beset by internal strife and external threats, he faced significant challenges. The late 3rd century BCE saw the Seleucid Empire, once vast, grappling with internal divisions, powerful rivals like Pergamon and Egypt, and the rise of ambitious satraps.

Seleucus III, weak and lacking charisma, struggled to control the empire. His reliance on advisors, particularly Hermeias, alienated others and further fragmented authority. He launched a campaign to reclaim territories lost to Pergamon, but his indecisive leadership and growing dissent within the army created an opening for a conspiracy.

Two Galatian officers, Nicanor and Apaturius, assassinated Seleucus III in 223 BC. Achaeus, a skilled general and cousin of the king, assumed command. Despite being offered the throne, Achaeus remained loyal to the Seleucid dynasty, stabilized the western front against Pergamon, and eliminated the conspirators.

Seleucus III's reign highlights the empire's fragility. Internal divisions, weak leadership, and external pressures threatened to tear it apart. While Achaeus provided a temporary reprieve, the Seleucid Empire continued to face significant challenges, ultimately succumbing to internal strife and external invasions.
