3D Scanning the Mad Hatter Tea Party: A Wet Weather Test with Creality Otter
Is it possible to 3D scan wet stone?

I recently put the Creality Otter and Scan Bridge to the ultimate test with this massive scan of the Mad Hatter Tea Party statue in Warrington.

The Challenge The conditions were pretty rough. It had been raining heavily and the stone statue was absolutely soaking wet and shiny. I genuinely expected the moisture and surface reflections to cause major tracking issues or noisy data.

The Result To my amazement the Otter handled it with practically no problems at all. The tracking stayed solid and the surface detail came through incredibly clean. The only post processing needed was adding the floor and base. There was no heavy fixing, no patching, and no fighting the mesh. It just shows that even in less than ideal conditions, trusting the process can deliver a solid 3D scan.

History & Personal Connection This statue is a beloved landmark inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It features the Mad Hatter, Alice, the March Hare, and the Dormouse. It was officially unveiled on May 30, 1984, by Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

What makes this project special to me is that I was actually there as a child when they opened it. Seeing it again years later, and now being able to digitally preserve it through 3D scanning, feels like a true full circle moment.
