During the middle of the year in kindergarten, our goal is to get students reading books with two lines of print, less patterned sentences, and more words that are commonly phrased together. The students I chose first were the most struggling ones in the class. I strategically chose them to build their confidence from the start and make them feel like a leader and proud of what they do know. It’s also great to continue using students’ names as an anchor because it’s building meaningful connections to letter names and sounds.
