The plot showcases a love triangle where Sheetal (Manisha Koirala) and Isha (Kajol) both have feelings for Sahil (Bobby Deol) and are determined to win his love. The story begins with Governor Jaisingh Sinha (Raj Babbar), a renowned and honest politician. Sahil Sinha is his stepson, and his relationship with his father is strained, partly due to his mother, Sharda, marrying Sinha after the death of her first husband. Jaisingh tries his best to bond with Sahil, but Sahil remains distant. Jaisingh also has another son, Harsh. Ishwar Diwan (Paresh Rawal), Jaisingh's personal secretary, has a daughter named Isha (Kajol), who is not only Sahil's friend but also deeply in love with him. फिल्म की कहानी में एक लव ट्राएंगल दिखाया गया है, जिसमें शीतल (मनीषा कोइराला) और ईशा (काजोल) साहिल (बॉबी देओल) को पसंद करती हैं। दोनों ही उसके प्यार को पाना चाहती हैं। कहानी की शुरुआत गवर्नर जयसिंह सिन्हा (राज बब्बर) एक मशहूर और ईमानदार राजनेता है। साहिल सिन्हा उसका सौतेला बेटा होता है। उसकी मां, शारदा अपने पति के मौत के बाद सिन्हा के साथ शादी कर लेती है। शायद इसलिये साहिल की अपने पिता से नहीं बनती है। अक्सर वहां से उखड़ा हुआ रहता है। लेकिन जयसिंह उसे अपनी नजदीकियां बढ़ने की हर संभव कोशिश करता है। सिन्हा का एक और छोटा बेटा, हर्ष भी है। ईश्वर दीवान (परेश रावल) उसका पर्सनल सेक्रेटरी है और उसकी बेटी ईशा (काजल) साहिल की दोस्त होने का साथ उसे बेहद पसंद भी करती है। वहीं मेघनाद चौधरी (दलीप ताहिल) की बेटी, शीतल (मनीषा कोइराला) भी साहिल को मन ही मन पंसद करती है, लेकिन साहिल के मन में उसके लिए कुछ नहीं होता है।
साहिल को अपने दोस्त ईशा से प्यार करने लगता है लेकिन साहिल के पापा (राज बब्बर) उनके इस रिश्ते के खिलाफ हैं और चाहते हैं कि वह शीतल (मनीषा कोइराला) से शादी कर ले। इस उथल-पुथल में जयसिंह की हत्या हो जाती है। पिता से हमेशा नाराज रहने के कारण लोगों का शक साहिल पर जाता है और उसे जेल जाना पड़ता है। इसके बाद फिल्म में जबरदस्त ट्विस्ट तब आता है जब आप इस फिल्म को अंत तक देखें और इस बात का अंदाजा लगाएं कि आखिर हत्यारा कौन है?
