A shocking incident has unfolded at Nishtar Hospital in Multan, where 25 to 30 patients in the dialysis unit have been diagnosed with HIV. This alarming outbreak came to light in October 2024, when a patient undergoing dialysis tested positive for HIV, prompting a thorough screening of all patients.

Investigations revealed that the likely cause of the outbreak was the reuse of a dialysis machine that had been used on an HIV-positive patient, without proper sterilization. This egregious lapse in infection control protocols has put numerous lives at risk.

In the aftermath of this incident, six hospital employees, including the Medical Superintendent and the Head of the Nephrology Ward, have been suspended. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz visited the hospital and directed action against those responsible.
