Detailed Summary: Specialized Media for Assisting Route Travel (SMART) provides person-centered travel instructions for travelers with special needs. The SMART Wayfinding System has been developed through a collaborative partnership between the USDOT’s Accessible Transportation Technology Research Initiative (ATTRI) and AbleLink Smart Living Technologies. Routes used in the SMART Wayfinding System are developed according to the SMART Wayfinding Specification, a JSON-based de facto standard for defining route instructions which can be used throughout the SMART ecosystem by route players, builders and route repositories. This video demonstrates several components of the SMART Wayfinding System which is designed to increase accessibility to public transit for anyone needing multimedia based personalized navigation instructions. SMART routes are comprised of geolocation based personalized travel instructions in the form of pictures, verbal instructions, textual information and vibration prompts. The system uses GTFS transit data to create cloud-based libraries of SMART Routes, which can then be accessed by a user of a SMART Ready app (such as WayFinder from AbleLink) on a mobile device. The downloaded route can be used as is or customized using the app itself or a web-based SMART Route Builder application. Personalized route instructions can meet the specific needs of an individual inexperienced with independent use of the public transit system. Remote caregivers are also able to monitor the travel activity in real-time through a cloud service designed to be compatible with the SMART Wayfinding System. This video illustrates how a user of the SMART Ready wayfinding app can access a cloud-based SMART Route Library in a particular geographic area, and then use the app to more independently ride the city bus – following the accessible step-by-step travel instructions to complete his or her trip.
