She mentions how for the most part, PCOS and PCOS are the same things, and the only difference found is when during an ultrasound, polycystic ovaries are detected, it's called PCOD. When one has a spectrum of other symptoms because of PCOD, it is called PCOS.
PCOD occurs when the ovaries produce many immature or partially mature eggs due to poor lifestyle, obesity, stress, and hormonal imbalance. This condition can lead to anovulation, where ovaries stop releasing eggs. The various symptoms of PCOD include:
🔹Irregular or delayed periods
🔹Excessive weight gain or difficulty with losing weight
🔹Excess body hair growth, especially in the jawline, chin, chest, stomach, and back
Hair loss from the scalp
🔹Infertility
Additionally, she mentions how PCOS is a more severe form of polycystic ovaries that can cause diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol levels as one ages, and sleep apnea if you are overweight. However, she adds that the majority of the time, it's a lifestyle disease caused by an unhealthy diet without exercise, or if you don't have adequate sleep and experience a high-stress level, it might aggravate the condition. Genetic factors play a role, too; having a family history of diabetes or thyroid dysfunction might make one more likely to develop the disease.
However, around 5- 10% of women in their childbearing years (12 to 45) suffer from PCOD, a hormonal condition. In this condition, a woman's hormones go out of balance, creating various symptoms, including the absence of ovulation, irregular menstrual cycle, difficulty conceiving, weight gain, acne, and hirsutism. While the prevalence of PCOD differs, it affects around 9% to 22% of Indian women.
She adds how some minor tweaks in your diet and lifestyle can help you control PCOD/PCOS like:
🔹Cutting down high glycemic index carbohydrates or sweets
🔹Including more protein-rich food items
🔹Consuming more fruits and vegetables
🔹40-60 minutes of exercise
🔹8-hour sleep cycle
🔹Reducing stress
