CONTEXT:
On August 8, 2024, CrossFit Games athlete Lazar Dukic went missing under water during the first day of the 2024 CrossFit Games in Fort Worth, Texas. His body was later found after drowning during the final stretch of an 800-meter swim event. Immediately, questions and commentary swirled about the safety measures that were put in place for the event, and quite a few choices made by the event organizers drew scrutiny from the public. All in all, this appears to have been an entirely and easily preventable incident. Now, more questions will emerge about whether the organizers of the event may face both civil liability and criminal liability for Dukic's death.
