Описание к видео Orkney 2025 - Women’s 10,000 metres Final

There was a fantastic entry for the first track final of the 2025 Games, with 15 lining up – the biggest field for the women’s 10,000 metres in the history of the Island Games. The lineup included the silver medallist from the 2023 Games, Amy Kelland (Isle of Wight), while the 2005 gold medallist Michelle Sandison (Shetland) is still running at a high level. Marina Bagur Olives, Katie Clubb and Nix Petit have all enjoyed medal success in other distance events.

It was, however, a newcomer to the Island Games, 38 year old Christa Cain from the Isle of Man, whose recent road form made her the probable favourite for the race - despite the fact that this was the first time she had contested this distance on the track.

Christa athlete made her intentions clear right from the start, with an opening lap that was on target for a sub-35 minute time - well inside schedule for the Games record of 36:11.68 which had stood to Ann-Catrin Nordman of Åland since 1997. Looking confident and strong, the Isle of Man athlete continued to power round the track in metronomically consistent lap times, still on 35-minute pace, and by soon after the halfway point she had lapped the entire field.

Amy Kelland settled into second place a short way ahead of a group battling for third place, comprising Gayle Lindsay, Marina Bagur Olives, Katie Clubb, Nix Petit and Michelle Sandison. There was plenty of support all round the track for the Orkney runners, with Erika Marwick having a big banner on display on the sidelines.

Christa went through the 5km point in 17:29 and looking set to take down the Games record by a substantial margin. Behind her the pack was starting to break up, and Marina was right with Amy having pulled away from the chasers. In the closing laps Christa slipped just outside 35-minute pace, but a strong final lap brought her home to a superb victory in a time of 35:16.83, close to one minute inside the 28-year-old record. It was an outstanding performance, fully appreciated by the large crowd.

The battle for the silver medal went right to the wire, with a spectacular sprint finish down the home straight which was won by Amy Kelland by a fraction of a second from Marina Bagur Olives. Katie Clubb ran strongly on her Island Games return after ten years to take fourth, fifth in her first Games since 2017 was Gayle Lindsay, and Michelle Sandison just held off a late challenge from Nix Petit to take sixth place - two decades on from winning the gold medal.

It was an entertaining race held in wonderful weather conditions, with Christa Cain setting the first new Games record of the week with a brilliant performance.
