The top United Nations court has dismissed a case brought by Sudan, which accused the United Arab Emirates of violating the UN Genocide Convention by arming and funding the rebel paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces, in Sudan's civil war.
The International Court of Justice stated that it "manifestly lacked" the authority to proceed with the case and ultimately threw it out. Although both Sudan and the UAE are signatories to the 1948 Genocide Convention, the UAE has a special exemption regarding the part of the treaty that grants jurisdiction to the court in The Hague.
