To date, the strongest growth driver for renewable energy (RE) has been the affordability of new electricity generation. This driver will persist, and now a second growth driver increasing RE growth is the greater demand for clean, green, sustainable electricity. Such aspirations come from customers, corporations, developers, generators, governments, and other entities around the world. As RE transforms the grid from the old model of fixed generation and variable load, stable grid operation will be challenged by the combination of variable generation and variable load. This session will explore the technology developments underway to enable high RE penetration on the grid that sustains reliability and adds resiliency to grid operation. This technology can store renewable electricity not for hours or days, but for weeks and months. Technologies will include battery storage, thermal storage, mechanical storage, gravity storage, and hybrid storage technologies.
