Let’s say that you want to find the top 3, or largest values in a data set, such as in this example of employees sales numbers.

To do this, we are going to use the LARGE function.

Start by left clicking on the answer cell, here, cell D2, so it is highlighted and then type in an equals sign. From here we type in lar and a pop up box will appear, in the box, we want to left double click on large. Next we need to tell excel the range of cells we want to find the largest value of, which are the values in column C. So, left click and hold on cell C2, and drag down over the last value, cell C18, and then release the click and hold.

Next we type in a comma, and then we need to enter the number of the place or rank we want to know, which is 1, for 1st place. Now, we type in a closed parenthesis to close off the function and then hit the enter key, and we have our answer 96.

To make it easier to fill in for 2nd and 3rd place we are going to modify the formula we entered into cell D2. To do this, left double click on D2, and then we go into the formula and type in a dollar sign in front of both B’s, the 2, and 18, as you see here. This creates an absolute reference to the range of cells, B2 through B18. And then we hit enter.

Next, we again left click on cell D2, and go to the bottom right corner of the cell and the cursor will turn black. From here we drag down to the answer for 3rd place, cell D4, and then release the click and hold.

Now we need to adjust the formulas in D3, and D4. So, left double click on D3, and at the end of the formula, change the 1 to a 2, then hit enter and we have 83 as our answer. I am going to do the same in cell D4, change the 1 to a 3, hit enter and we have 79 as the answer.
