Northern Norway. This video review tells about the northernmost region of the kingdom of Norway. The video was filmed using a drone in 4k resolution so that viewers can see the endless and diverse landscapes from a bird's eye view.
general information
It is one of the regions of Norway bordering Finland, Russia, Sweden and Central Norway. Only 482 thousand inhabitants live on its territory. The small development of the territory is probably due to the rather harsh climate, thanks to which this part of the country was called the "country of the midnight sun" and "the country of the northern lights".
Capital
The capital of the region is the city of Tromsø, one of the few cities in Northern Norway that boasts a population of more than 50,000 people.
Climate
There are two climatic zones on the territory of the region: in the far north, the subarctic is rampant, and in the rest of the temperate oceanic. Thanks to the North Atlantic current, winters in this region are softened. The average temperature in January reaches -5 degrees Celsius. Despite the snowy and mild winters, in summer the temperature rarely rises above 10-12 degrees.
Nature
The region can truly captivate with its landscapes and natural landscapes untouched by anthropogenic influence. Here you can find both green plains overgrown with vegetation and sharp rocks cut by fjords. Particularly beautiful places can be found on numerous beaches.
Main cities: Tromsø, Bodø, Nordland
Tromsø is located on the island of Tromsø and is connected to the mainland by a long bridge. It combines a daring, even harsh nature with a high level of education and culture, making it known in Europe as the "Paris of the North".
The town of Bodø was previously only a transit point on the way to the Lofontaine Islands. Now it is a fairly developed settlement with its own cultural value. However, its most important asset can be considered 17 reserves located on its territory, which have become a habitat for thousands of species of coniferous plants and birds. The city is the administrative center of the county (as the administrative-territorial unit is called in Norway) Nordland, which stretches along the northwestern coast of the Scandinavian Peninsula, including the Lofonten Islands. This county is far removed from the densely populated areas of the kingdom, making it the cleanest part of Norway.
What to see
While in Tromsø, it is worth taking a walk in the Polar Park. A huge number of polar animals live on the territory of the northernmost park in the world. In the same city, the world's northernmost Botanical Garden is located, walking along which you can "breathe" fresh air for the year ahead. You can see the panoramas of the city by riding the cable car to the top of Mount Storsteinen, which offers views from a height of more than 400 meters.
Despite the fact that it is impossible to find tropical beaches beyond the Arctic Circle, however, there is a truly paradise island - the island of Andeia, located in the Vesterålen archipelago. Its views are in no way inferior to the Hawaiian Islands, and entertainment includes relaxing walks along the coast, hiking and cycling.
The Vesterålen archipelago is a favorite habitat for whales. You can watch them, sitting on rocks specially equipped for tourists, growing out of the sea surface. From there, views of green onions and snow-white beaches open up.
If a trip to Northern Norway fell on the period from late September to March, then almost every tourist dreams of watching the northern lights. On the Svalbard archipelago, there is the settlement of Longyearbyen, in which rooms with a glass roof are rented to visitors. This is one of the most comfortable ways to observe this natural phenomenon.
Narvik has some of the most extreme ski slopes. There is no ice in the port of this city in winter, so it also attracts fishing enthusiasts.
Attractions
Most of the attractions are concentrated in its capital - the city of Tromsø. In the historical part, you can walk along the main street Storgata, walk to the market square Stortorget, from where you can enjoy a nice view of the harbor.
The Arctic Cathedral is a mid-century Art Nouveau building. Outwardly, it resembles an iceberg thanks to unique stained-glass windows. In summer, concerts are held on its square.
The northernmost Catholic church in the world is called the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
