Panama's government, led by President Jose Raoul Molino, has intensified efforts to control migration by erecting barbed wire barriers in the Darien Gap. This dense jungle is a crucial route for migrants from Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, China, and mid-African countries. Over 47,000 people risk their lives here from January to June 2024. These new barriers pose serious humanitarian concerns, forcing migrants to seek even more dangerous routes or face deadly encounters at sea.

AfroResistance, having long criticized Panama's approach, records firsthand accounts from Black migrants who endured the Darien journey and faced inhumane treatments. Panama's unilateral decision to fortify its border has stalled a collaborative initiative with Colombia to address migration. In response, AfroResistance is organizing a delegation to Panama in October to assess the situation and advocate for migrant rights.
