The sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) is a medium sized bear native to India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. It has long, shaggy black fur and a pale crescent on its chest. Its jaws and lips are specially adapted for sucking up termites and ants, and it often uses its curved claws to tear open insect nests.

Mostly active at night, the sloth bear spends its days resting in caves or hollow trees. Mothers carry cubs on their backs until they are old enough to walk on their own. Unlike many other bears, sloth bears do not hibernate, so they must find food year round. Classified as Vulnerable, they face threats from habitat loss and human conflict, but community based conservation efforts have helped stabilize some local populations.
