Modern Classics: Vesper Americano

The vesper is a problem drink and that should surprise nobody at all. It was created by a writer, Ian Flemming in his book Casino Royal (a James Bond Story) and named for Bond's nemesis Vesper Lynd. Although it's not new that bartenders have adapted drinks from films, this happens all the time and is all over the internet, what is surprising is that this drink wasn't just adapted and reformulated (as it probably should have been) It was adapted literally from the book and in my opinion it has been done badly. I don't want to give up too much as I cover all of this and more in the episode and why spoil it? I will say this though, this episode is not an episode that shows you how to make a Vesper. If you'd like to do that there's plenty on YouTube that you can watch. This episode is an adaptation of the drink made by bartender Brent Falco in 2013 during her tenure as Bar manager of Cole's French Dip in downtown Los Angeles. This I think is a much more satisfying and perfectly balanced variation on the problematic drink Bond made famous. Although it's a longer than normal episode, if you like great drinks, and don't mind nerding out with me, it's worthwhile to watch this episode and learn about this drink which I put I think should be a Modern Classic. Does it meet the criteria? Not yet, but this video is my bid to get it there.

another note: The article makes shows the specs for the drink as 3oz 1oz 1/2oz which to me is not a balanced drink and too boozy, but read the article, it echoes all of my sentiments on this problematic drink.
