As of 2025, Canada holds around 170 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. Some of these lie off the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador and in the province of Saskatchewan. But Alberta is the true epicenter—home to an astonishing 95% of the country’s reserves. Yet there's a catch. Most of that oil isn’t easily accessible. It’s trapped in sand.
Alberta’s oil sands are among the world’s largest deposits of unconventional oil. The term “unconventional” is key. Unlike light crude, which flows naturally and can be pumped straight from the ground, the oil in these sands is bitumen—a heavy, sticky, tar-like substance. Bitumen doesn’t flow without help, and it’s nearly impossible to pump out with standard drilling equipment.
To extract bitumen, two main methods are used. The first is open-pit mining, which involves scooping out the sand and then separating the oil in processing plants. The second method involves injecting high-pressure steam underground to heat the bitumen until it becomes fluid enough to extract. Both are costly, energy-intensive, and environmentally challenging.
