Hard Foiled | Downwinding Underfoiled | Axis Zhik North Ppc

I am Loving these onshore conditions! When I first started downwinding with a wing, we seemed to get Nor’easters all the time and I thought that was typical conditions. Shaan let me know at the time that this was very unusual but I took it for granted. Now we only seem to get Nor’easters perhaps once per week at most but more like once every two weeks… oh well. That just makes them all the more special.

we are on the eastern side of New Zealand, just north of Auckland on a peninsula that is about 10-12km long.

If we get easterlies - normally as a NE the wind comes from the Pacific Ocean and has unlimited fetch giving us bigger ocean conditions. Right where we are there’s a few small islands out to sea which blocks and deflects some energy. It seems to stop us from getting the big 13-20sec period swell that open coast lines get.

If we get westerlies which we seem to most of the time currently… the wind come from over the mainland and we have to go out onto the peninsula to find spots that have enough fetch to build some rideable bumps… this is youre typical bay run style conditions. Great for surfing style downwinders and training grounds to hone the craft.

In this vid Im riding a proto foil that is around 1050-1150 squares which is a small foil for me and my style of riding(not a pump fest)

I was just a touch underfoiled for a lot of the run and also wasn’t used to this with the longer fuse… Im not sure how I fumbled my setup so badly… but got to learn somehow. If I could go back to this run I’d first downsize my board… and use my usual sillyshort fuse and perhaps Dylan’s 45cut down skinny as this makes for a very surfy and yet fast setup.
