Spy stories were the craze in the mid 60s, and 1965's 'Get Smart' was the definitive spoof of the genre. Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, the show catapulted Don Adams and Barbara Feldon to tv stardom. The 'slamming doors' opening sequence was named #2 of the 'top ten opening titles' as voted by the readers of TV Guide. Stars lined up to do cameos, and 'Get Smart' catchphrases were heard everywhere. The show, never in the top ten, did make the top 30. It moved from NBC to CBS for its final season. The titles didn't change much over the years. A different font in season three, later a new musical arrangement with zoomed shots of DC landmarks. You'll see two opens and two end credit rolls accompanied by the theme music of Irving Szathmary.
25 years after 'Get Smart' ended, it began again, this time on Fox. Maxwell Smart and 99 (now and then) were back, but they weren't the main characters. The show was about two younger spies (one of them Max and 99's son) and that isn't what viewers wanted to see. The familiar theme was back, now considerably jazzed up, and in stereo - you'll see opening titles and end credits This sequel series only lasted six episodes, until the door slammed one last time on 'Get Smart'.
