When God says, "Kill everything that breathes!" did he really mean kill EVERYTHING? When Jesus says you must hate your father and mother to be worthy of following him, did he really mean HATE? Apologists will say no, of course not! And they toss out this absurd hyperbole defense, as if that’s supposed to get God off the hook. Today we’re going to break down the harm of hyperbole. It may be great for storytelling in terms of its shock value, making a point and ensuring something’s memorable, but it’s terrible for building a trusting and loving relationship with the supposed God of all love, goodness and compassion. Hey God, are you just trying to tell an epic story, or are you trying to woo people to your side and save them? Your hyperbole makes you look like an arrogant incompassionate monster, and it scares people off. It makes you look worse, not better. It’s not doing you any favors. You’re God. Say what you mean and mean what you say, especially since you’re not the author of confusion. Hyperbole shouldn’t be necessary for you. Or desired.
