A long-standing question in HIV biology has been how the virus copies its genome using raw materials from its host cell without being detected by immune sensors. Scientists in Leo James’ group in the LMB’s Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry (PNAC) Division have discovered that HIV hides inside a protective protein shell called the capsid while it builds DNA, using specialised pores in the capsid to suck in the nucleotides it needs to copy its genome.
