Hey everyone, my name is Nakul Sharma, and I’m a hobbyists with about 15 years of experience.

Today, I’ve set up a 3ft planted tank for my new Oranda Goldfish and Ranchu that I’ve booked recently. Yes, it’s a planted tank for goldfish, but don’t worry, the plants aren’t in the tank. I’ve added them to the sump to make sure the fishes don’t uproot them.

While setting up the tank, I added aquarium salt to it. I don’t recommend using salt in planted setups if you aren’t sure about the right amount to use based on the tank volume and plant type. Salt can damage most aquatic plants, so you should avoid using it if you are unsure about the safety levels.

I also added anti-chlorine to the water before adding media to the filter because chlorine can kill the bacteria present in water, and at the same time, it can also prevent bacterial growth in the water/filter as long as it’s present in the water. In simple words, chlorine won’t let nitrifying bacteria to establish in the filter media, which is the last thing you would want, as it will eventually lead to an ammonia spike.

After adding anti chlorine, I placed four bags of ceramic rings in the second chamber of my sump filter. These ceramic rings will ensure biological filtration in the tank, and for mechanical filtration, I’ve added filter pads in the first chamber. In the sump filter’s third chamber, I’ve added a return pump, a motor, that will add the filtered water back to the tank.

I didn’t want to wait for a long time to cycle the tank, so I used Seachem stability to introduce beneficial bacteria to the tank. It will allow me to add my oranda and Ranchu goldfish sooner to the tank.

This tank looks simple as of now, but the plants in the sump will grow with time and the background will become thicker.
