Submarines rely heavily on stealth to carry out missions and stay safe from detection. During World War II, their main job was to sneak up on enemy ships and sink them without being heard. Even small noises traveling through the thick steel hull could give away their position. So submarine captains would order "silent running" whenever they were hunting or being hunted. Strict rules were enforced - no talking above a whisper, moving carefully to avoid thumps and scrapes, and operating machinery with minimal vibrations. Cooking and maintenance all had special silent techniques. As sonar technology advanced, maintaining total silence became even more crucial. Modern nuclear subs on surveillance missions are just as careful. One decibel too loud could expose them. Submarine crews really did have to be absolutely still and soundless during silent running periods. It takes intense concentration and discipline from everyone onboard.
