We've had a very cool spring and the Koi bamboo is shooting a little later than usual. I had a few new shoots appear a couple weeks back but then we got hit with cold rain for a few weeks. The new shoots stopped growing and no new ones appeared until this week.

Now there are several new shoots, many of them a foot tall in just a few days.

This bamboo is evergreen and cold hardy to 0F. Having it in boxes, I spend about 2-3 hours a YEAR maintaining it. It's a great privacy screen and the new shoots are edible!

New shoots are very soft and will grow over the next few weeks. Each shoot will grow to its max height in that time period and after a few weeks, that shoot will not grow any taller. New shoots of this variety grow about a foot taller than the previous year's until it reaches a max height around 20 feet tall in these containers. As it reaches its max height, it also hardens and becomes very durable.
