Описание к видео On Saying Please by A G Gardiner

In this essay Gardiner speaks about civility and courteous and its importance in everyday life in creating a pleasant lively and healthy environment in the society He also discusses legal regulations and social norms of an incident. Being courteous and well-mannered is not legally mandated but still it is generally expected in our society or at least the most wished for. It can create a very lively society. The young liftman in a City office who threw a passenger out of his lift the other morning and was fined for the offence was undoubtedly in the wrong. The passenger, said, 'Top' and the liftman demanded 'Top-please' and when this concession is refused, he not only declined to comply with the instruction, but also physically assault and knock him down. When this even was taken to the legal jury, it was concluded that discourtesy is not a legal offence, but physical assault is. A.G. Gardiner believes that people must learn to be as polite as possible, but also to accept impoliteness when it occurs, as a part of life. The story of the liftman and his pushing of the man out of the lift leaves two people to suffer. The liftman who is likely to be charged by the police and the man himself who was pushed out of the lift. Though some critics might suggest the lack of courtesy shown by the man who was pushed out of the life is enough for the liftman to take matters into his own hand. The liftman only suffers by his actions. Whereas if he had taken the moral high ground and continued to be polite to the man. He may have in fact changed the man’s approach to him. By showing civility the narrator argues that more is to be gained than if one is ill-mannered or ill-tempered towards another person. If anything, the liftman has lost his peace of mind and possibly his freedom. If he was polite, he could win the moral and spiritual victory over the rude passenger. Gardiner also describes his experience with a friendly bus conductor to show how like bad manners, good manners are also contagious.
