ASTM Designation D698-70
Proctor compaction test. The Proctor compaction test is a laboratory method of experimentally determining the optimal moisture content at which a given soil type will become most dense and achieve its maximum dry density. The term Proctor is in honor of R. R.
static compaction: compaction in which a load is applied slowly.
dynamic compaction: compaction by repeated blows of a falling weight.
vibratory compaction: compaction by a vibrating rammer.
jolting compaction: compaction by repeatedly raising and dropping the mould.
kneading compaction: compaction using a wedge-shaped tamper.
uniform compaction: compaction using a piston equal in diameter to the mould apart from clearance.
Proctor compaction test:
1: one of a series of dynamic kneading compaction tests, see BS 1377, and beware variations in other countries.
2: the original version of this series of tests.
Moisture condition test: a dynamic uniform compaction test, see below.
Dietert compaction test: a dynamic uniform compaction test (see Head, 1980, vol.1 pp 300-304).
Harvard (miniature) compaction test: a small-scale dynamic kneading compaction test (see Head, 1980, vol.1 pp 304-306).
California static load compaction test (Porter compaction test): a static uniform compaction test (see DSIR, 1952, pp.162-3).
Dry Density : Moisture Content
optimum moisture content: scalar [0, 0, 0]: gravimetric moisture content corresponding to the maximum dry density obtained as the moisture content is varied, either as measured in a standard laboratory test, or as achievable by a specified method of compaction in the field, subject to the condition that when two maxima are obtained, it is (usually ?) the wetter moisture content that is accepted (after DSIR, 1952, p.526; BS 1377: Part 1: Section 2.2.23: 1990).
optimum water content: synonym for optimum moisture content (listed in ISSMFE, 1981, p.69, without definition, and with an incorrectly inserted hyphen.)
maximum dry density: scalar [1,-3, 0]: that maximum dry density obtained by compaction at the optimum moisture content using the relevant method of compaction (after DSIR, 1952, p.526; BS 1377: Part 1: Section 2.2.24: 1990).
maximum compacted dry density: synonym for maximum dry density (BS 1377: Part 1: Section 2.2.24: 1990).
dry density - moisture content relationship: relationship between dry density and moisture content under a specified procedure, often presented as a graph.
air voids line: line of constant air voids content in a graph such as dry density versus moisture content (after Craig, 1997, pp.29-31; also Head, 1980, vol.1 p.289 etc.)
zero air voids line: line indicating the fully saturated state in a graph such as dry density versus moisture content (after Craig, 1997, p.30).
saturation line: synonym for zero air voids line (e.g. Craig, 1997, p.30).
relative compaction: scalar [0, 0, 0]: dry density in situ divided by the maximum dry density obtained by a specified method (after DSIR, 1952, p.527).
Moisture Condition Value
The terms in this Section are intended only for use with the moisture condition test.
moisture condition test: A standard dynamic full-face compaction test (see Craig, 1997, pp.34-7; who refers to BS 1377: Part 4: 1990 - to be checked).
moisture condition value: '10 times the logarithm of the number of blows corresponding to a change in penetration of 5 mm in the moisture condition test' (Craig, 1997, p.36).
MCV: moisture condition value.
Granular Soils
The terms in this group were intended for granular soils; but it might be possible to apply them to other soils. The wording of ISSMFE specifies laboratory conditions; that of BS 1377 seems to imply field conditions: hence some differences. However, for all of these terms, and for the maxima and minima especially, the conditions intended must be defined.
limiting densities: "the dry densities corresponding to the extreme states of packing (loosest and densest) at which the particles of a granular soil can be placed" (BS 1377: Part 1: Section 2.2.40: 1990).
maximum density: scalar [1,-3, 0]: "the maximum dry density at the densest practicable state of packing of particles of granular soil" (BS 1377: Part 1: Section 2.2.41: 1990).
minimum density: scalar [1,-3, 0]: "the minimum dry density at the loosest state of packing of dry particles which can be sustained in a granular soil" (BS 1377: Part 1: Section 2.2.42: 1990).
void ratio in (the) densest state: scalar [0, 0, 0]: "minimum void ratio obtainable by a standard laboratory procedure" (ISSMFE, 1981).
void ratio in (the) loosest state: scalar [0, 0, 0]: "maximum void ratio obtainable by a standard laboratory procedure" (ISSMFE, 1981).
