Guruvayur - Elephant Camp
The Elephant Camp in Guruvayur, known as Punnathur Kotta or Anakkotta, is the largest sanctuary for elephants in the world and holds a special in the hearts of both devotees and elephant lovers. The Guruvayur Elephant Camp is home to around 60 elephants, all of which have been offered by devotees to the Guruvayurappan Temple. This sanctuary presents a rare opportunity to witness the majestic elephants up close, blending cultural, educational, and spiritual experiences.

Once the property of the Punnathur Kings, the land was acquired by temple authorities in 1975 and transformed into a sanctuary. Visitors can explore the historical former residence of the Punnathur Raja, now repurposed to support the elephants and retain the traditional naalu kettu, a rectangular home with a central courtyard, now a training school for mahouts, known locally as Papans.

The Guruvayur elephants play a crucial role in the religious ceremonies of Kerala. These elephants, integral to various temple rituals and festivals, symbolize strength, divinity, and devotion. The elephants at the Guruvayur Elephant Camp are treated with traditional methods to address any ailments. The camp authorities ensure that these gentle giants receive the best care possible, reflecting the deep respect and reverence that the local community has for these animals.

A visit to the Elephant Camp in Guruvayur promises an interactive and memorable experience. Guests can participate in rituals such as the Gaja Pooja, where elephants are worshipped, and Aanayoottu, a feeding ceremony. Under the guidance of mahouts, visitors can feed the elephants, creating a unique and personal connection with these magnificent creatures. This hands-on experience is particularly enriching for families and children. The annual elephant race, where the winner carries the idols of Lord Guruvayur during the Shiveli procession, is a spectacle that offers a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of these animals.
