So by the mid-2000s, stories began to spread. People in Shanglin heard whispers about Ghana. They heard it was a land rich in gold, where rivers carried fine sands full of the precious metal. It was said that, with the right connections, someone could get access to small-scale mining sites or partner with locals who already had licenses. The idea was simple: bring modern equipment, bring money, and extract gold faster than anyone had before.

The movement began slowly around 2006, but it didn’t take long before thousands were heading to Ghana. One person would arrive, make contacts, and send word back home. Then, relatives and friends followed. Soon, whole family networks stretched from Shanglin to Ghana’s southern and western regions, where rivers and forests hid some of the richest deposits.

These newcomers brought in pumps, portable wash plants, and powerful excavators.
