Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini was elected to succeed Pope John XXIII on June 21, 1963. He completed the Second Vatican Council, fostered ecumenism and undertook far-reaching changes in liturgy, the Roman curia and overall attitudes within the Church. He stressed Marian devotion, the need of the rich to care for the poor and life issues. He died in 1978 on the Feast of the Transfiguration. His cause for canonization was authorized in 1993.
