The first single-screen movie theatre in India was Elphinstone Picture Palace, built in Calcutta in 1907 by Jamshed Framji Madan, one of India’s earliest film entrepreneurs. Over the decades it became Minerva Cinema, then Chaplin, before being demolished in 2013—its site now houses a municipal office named Chaplin Annex.

J.F. Madan, originally a Parsi theatre impresario, was among the pioneers who introduced motion pictures to India. Elphinstone Picture Palace opened in 1907 at Esplanade, Calcutta, making it the country’s earliest dedicated cinema hall. By the 1920s, Madan’s company, Madan Theatres Ltd., controlled nearly half of India’s cinemas and produced silent films like Nala Damayanti. Chaplin Cinema, as it was later known, remained a landmark until its demolition, and the building’s replacement as Chaplin Annex is one of the few surviving reminders of India’s earliest moviegoing days.
