Game Review & Impressions
---------------------------------------------------
Another title to emerge from Europe's lesser-known coin-op scene, Steel Force proved to be more intriguing than most. Anyone familiar with the Alien Breed series of games by Team 17 should instantly recognise the influences here - navigating various industrial complexes and alien environments from a top-down perspective, blasting enemies with various weapons and collecting various power-ups along the way.

Being an arcade game, Steel Force changes the emphasis to focus on the shooting and, to the developer's credit, it's a surprisingly solid effort. You're expected to simply blast doors open, rather than collect keys, which certainly speeds up the pace, and the fact each level is on a timer means you can't afford to rest on your laurels.

It won't win any awards for innovation and it certainly gets repetitive after the first couple of levels, but credit where it's due; Steel Force could have been a janky ol' pile of rubbish, but it's not. As with Gaelco, it's really interesting to see European coin-op manufacturers being influenced by games from the domestic home computer market, and that alone makes this worth checking out.
