Today’s video is on Hamelia patens, also known as Scarlet bush, Mexican fire bush, Hummingbird bush, Firecracker shrub.
It is an evergreen perennial shrub, native to south Florida, Mexico , Central and South America.
It can grow and reach a height of 10 feet or more. I am growing the dwarf variety of this plant which has height of 1-3 feet and spread of 1-2 feet.
This plant has a long blooming season and it flowers throughout the year in the tropical climate .
The flowers are tubular, showy, 2-4 cm long,bright orange red in colour and appear in clusters at the tip of the branches.
Flowers contain sweet nectar and attract butterflies, bees, sunbirds, hummingbirds and other pollinators.
Flowers give way to small berry like fruit which is relished by birds.
The fruit contains seeds.
The leaves are pointed,oval shaped, gray green in colour with pinkish veins. Leaves turn red in autumn.
The plant does well in any type of soil as long as it is well draining.
Water requirement is average and the plant is drought tolerant once established.
It does well in full Sun and in partial sun.
I am growing it as a lawn border in the ground in semishade condition and it is doing well and it flowers throughout the year. The flowers also attract lot of sunbirds who love to sip on the sweet nectar of these flowers.
Propagation from seeds and from stem cutting.
Low maintenance plant needs pruning to maintain the desired size and shape. Pruning also boosts flowering.
Give organic fertilisers regularly to keep it healthy, the plant is quite resistant to pests and disease.
You can grow it easily in container.
In ground grow as a hedge, border, group plantation, specimen or accent plant.
You can grow along a blank wall , fence, or as a backdrop for low growing plants.
Due to its sweet nectar, it is a great choice for growing in butterfly gardens and bird gardens.
The plant has medicinal qualities and used to treat some skin conditions.
This easy to grow , low maintenance, pest resistant, drought tolerant hardy plant with its pretty orange flowers will make a good addition to your garden.
