In this video, the technicians share with us the process of knurling on a lathe. This is a very common machining technique but requires high precision to create a surface with good grip and aesthetics. This work uses a tool called a knurling roller (with two wheels with diagonal grooves) that presses firmly against the surface of the workpiece rotating on the lathe.
Principle: Unlike turning or milling, which involves cutting away material, knurling is a process of plastic deformation. The knurling wheels press against the metal surface, pushing the material upwards to form shapes (usually rhombuses or straight lines).
Material in the video: Observing the color and chips, it appears to be brass or a type of copper alloy. This material has good ductility, making it very suitable for knurling because it is easily deformed without cracking.
This technique offers three core benefits: Increased grip (Friction): This is the main purpose. The surface after rolling will have raised ridges, providing a firmer grip and preventing slippage when hands are sweaty or greasy.
Applications: Tool handles, equipment knobs, dumbbells, or parts that need to be assembled and disassembled by hand. Increased size (Interference): Because the material is compressed and bulges, the outer diameter of the part will increase slightly compared to the original.
Effectiveness: Sometimes used to correct errors when the shaft diameter is machined slightly too small for the hole, resulting in a tighter press-fit. Aesthetics: The rough, diamond-shaped surface creates a professional, high-quality finish for mechanical products, concealing small scratches that may occur during use.
