Brown's plane was hit on the left wing at least once.
衆所周知，最早的戰機是從歐洲開始向世界推廣的。空戰屬於新時代產物，一般平民根本沒法成爲空軍，所以早期英德的飛行員大多數都是貴族，很有風範，按照騎士規則，他們根本不屑於幹那種射擊逃生者的事情。因爲這些講究紳士風度歐洲人的默契，才使得“不朝跳傘飛行員射擊”成爲《日內瓦公約》中的一項規定。也是因爲保留着這種騎士精神，在充滿血腥和暴力的二戰中，上演了一些充滿溫情和感動的時刻。
1943 年12月聖誕節前夕，美軍第379轟炸機大隊在執行任務過程中幾乎全軍覆沒。中尉查理•布朗作爲飛機指揮官的任務是，和其他7名戰友一起，去轟炸一個德國彈藥廠。布朗的轟炸機佔據了整個編隊危險性最高的左側，這是最容易犧牲的位置，而他們的下方，正被一大批德軍戰士和精良防空武器守衛着。兩架B-17被迅速擊中，之後又有幾架轟炸機墜落，布朗的座機左翼至少被擊中了一次。
