We’ll take a close look at three of the biggest vulnerabilities in the prosecution’s case and discuss whether any of them could create reasonable doubt for a jury.

Case Background:
Kouri Richins is accused of murdering her husband, Eric Richins, in March 2022 at their home in Kamas, Utah. Prosecutors allege she laced his Moscow Mule with a fatal dose of fentanyl. Eric, a successful real estate agent and contractor, was found unresponsive in the couple’s bedroom. His death was initially believed to be natural, but a later autopsy determined he died from fentanyl intoxication.

According to charging documents, investigators believe the couple’s marriage was under significant strain, with financial pressures mounting. Prosecutors allege Kouri was facing serious debt, had taken out substantial life insurance policies on Eric, and was involved in undisclosed business deals. The state also claims she previously attempted to poison him weeks earlier using fentanyl in a sandwich.

Kouri Richins gained national attention after publishing a children’s book about grief titled Are You With Me? less than a year after Eric’s death. She has pleaded not guilty and maintains her innocence. Her defense argues the case is circumstantial and challenges the credibility of key witnesses, including a confidential informant who allegedly supplied the fentanyl.
