Leviticus is a book of many details. It delineates the particulars of:
Old Testament sacrifices
The design and building of the tabernacle
Dietary laws
Which animals are clean and unclean
Intimate Relationship prohibitions
The dress of the priesthood
Explanation of their economy including housing, debts and servanthood.
Agriculture

Chapter 26 is powerful and moving. God becomes upset as he lays out his expectations for faithfulness. He proclaims his promises of prosperity if they are faithful and then it seems he cannot keep from divulging the disappoint, anger and punishment he will inflict upon them. Knowing the end from the beginning he itemizes events that would not happen for a thousand years. His thoughts fold over themselves as his emotions stir vigorously in his heart.

Having vented his frustrations regarding Israel's future wickedness he peacefully finishes the book with a few more technical expectations that he includes in his covenant with them. The concept of a covenant is an agreement between two or more parties based on a commitment to a vow or document. This document binds the relationship together. When one breaks the commitment as stated in the vow or document the relationship is severed and negative consequence occur. Therefore the document is referred to as law, it is binding.

The intricacies of these commands may seem arbitrary and unnecessary but they are the wishes of God Almighty. He knows what is best. It may take a life time of study to better understand the meaning behind many of these laws but as one continues to delve into the minutia of the Bible the wisdom of God not only is divulged but also incorporated in those that apply it.
