--------
John "Boxer" Mendoza shares his experience of living nearly 66% of his life within a gang, starting as a teenager. He describes it as all he knew, reflecting on his life devoted to an organization he was willing to die for. Mendoza elaborates on his feelings of betrayal and pain when he was no longer welcomed by the gang. He feared for his life and yet, he refused to cooperate with the police against his former crew. Meanwhile, he faced personal tragedies with the deaths of his wife, mother, and grandmother. Eventually, he decided to cooperate with the police, testifying not against specific individuals but to help explain how gang operations functioned. This act of cooperation allowed him to get a reduced sentence and he ultimately got a second chance at life. Nevertheless, Mendoza called it "the most undesirable thing" and the "hardest decision" he had ever made.
