The countdown has begun, you are between days 50 to 54 of gestation, and the puppies are about to arrive in a few days.

Now, you may be wondering: how can I know if my dog is going into labor?

Prenatal check-up
As I told you in the previous video, a dog's GESTATION lasts between 60 and 63 days, and although the exact moment of birth cannot be predicted, your dog will show signs that will indicate that she is about to give birth.

It is essential that between days 50 and 54 of gestation, you go to the vet again so that they can carry out a study that includes: ultrasound as part of prenatal control.

The vet will ensure the health of the female and the puppies; he will validate that the puppies have normal vital signs, the diameter of their heads coincide with the days of gestation, among other relevant data.

And at the same time, he will also be able to give you an approximate number of how many puppies are to come. This number often varies at birth, as ultrasound is not 100% accurate in detecting all babies in the womb.

Signs that your dog is going to labor
Maybe the most accurate indicator that a dog is going to labor is body temperature.

A healthy dog's temperature is slightly higher than humans and is between 100.4 and 102.2°F
, but as the date of birth approaches, it will drop to 98.6°F during days 60 to 63 of gestation.

As we don't know the exact moment of birth, the vet will tell you that from her last check-up, you should check the female's temperature rectally twice a day.

As the day of delivery approaches, you will notice some other signs in your dog, such as:

Almost absolute passivity: the female will not want to move and will sleep EVEN more than usual.

YOu should be very patient with her, as she most likely doesn't want or can go to the bathroom and does so as close as possible to where she is resting.

Lack of appetite: She will not want to taste food, although it is good that you invite her to eat in small amounts several times a day, and why not? Pampering her more than usual with a diet prepared especially for her.

In the last hours before your dog gives birth, the female may be restless, panting more than usual, and show signs of wanting to make a nest for the parturition.

Remember that both English and French bulldog puppies are born by cesarean section because, due to the physical structure of these dog breeds, giving birth to the pups through childbirth will put both the mother and the puppies at risk.

That’s why you must schedule the cesarean section with a veterinarian in time and evaluate the precise moment to perform the surgery without endangering either the offspring or the mother.
