Howdy ya’ll. The history of Baltimore, Maryland is one that has been intertwined with the fortunes of America from the earliest occupation of this landscape. However, the key aspects of Baltimore that stand out to us researching the Old World may be found in the history of Baltimore before European settlement.

For Baltimore is described in numerous early narratives from the 17th and 18th centuries as a land replete with evidence of earlier occupation, including a large number of earthworks and earth effigies. The mythical Susquehannock are described as developing The Chesapeake Bay with a multitude of elaborate fortifications, and yet the history in Baltimore appears to be even more ancient.

Beneath locations like Federal Hill in Baltimore, we find conjoined passageways; tunnel systems and catacombs which, according to early reports, ran below many of the streets of the city. As the architecture rose in colonial Maryland, we can see Baltimore quickly formed as the largest, and most strategically important city, and a large portion of early Baltimore was constructed using the Georgian style of architecture.
