A cochlear implant (CI) system is a solution to hearing loss that is quite different from a conventional hearing aid. While conventional aids amplify acoustic sounds, a cochlear implant system transforms acoustic sounds into electrical stimulation for the auditory nerve. In this way, it can be considered a substitute for a failed cochlea.

Cochlear implants are only recommended for people with severe to total perceptive hearing loss. The implant directly stimulates the auditory nerve in response to sounds captured by a microphone. It consists of an external part, called the processor, and an internal part, called the implant. There are also different types of implants for specific less common cases (ossified cochlea, damaged auditory nerve, etc.).

Individuals with severe to profound hearing loss can be left feeling socially isolated as their hearing loss affects communication and interaction with others. A cochlear implant is an effective solution can open up the world of hearing.

Most people with cochlear implants hear well enough to have normal conversations. This can help them face the challenges of daily life and reconnect with their family, friends and colleagues. They also say that they feel safer (for example, by being able to hear a fire alarm or oven timer), and that they are more independent and able to enjoy a social life. Small things such as using the telephone, making a doctor’s appointment or going out for a meal are no longer the challenge they once were.
