How can the US pay up for slavery? People are talking about reparations to try to narrow the vast wealth gap separating black and white Americans. And yet polls show most people are against the idea.

California may lead the way. It's set up a state task force - but economists say the sums required to really compensate for the past are into the hundreds of billions.

Congress is stuck on the issue at a national level. Now some towns and cities say they want to pay to create a fairer future.
