Museums Victoria Research Institute has retrieved the fossil skeleton of an extinct short-faced kangaroo from deep underground, in a cave in eastern Victoria.

It is one of the most complete examples of its species, Simosthenurus occidentalis, ever seen.

The retrieval took place over two years, and was carried by a Museums Victoria-led team including recreational cavers and Parks Victoria rangers.

Radiocarbon dating of closely associated sediment indicates the animal fell into the cave at least 49,400 years ago.
