I was suspended by Etsy after 8 years of being a seller with almost 14,000 transactions and an overall 5 star review rating. Over the years, I enjoyed selling on Etsy and never had any issues. That all changed recently.

This year I had my first bad experience with Etsy. I discovered that one of my jewelry listings that I was advertising with Etsy ads was being shown in search for very vulgar search terms. My listing had nothing to do with those search terms, but Etsy was showing my listing for them and was charging me for the clicks. Besides my money being wasted, this likely negatively affected my Etsy shop overall. I tried reaching out to Etsy to resolve this issue, but I couldn't get anyone to help me. I believe this is a serious problem that Etsy needs to address.

I also started to receive listing deactivation's and Policy Violations for listings I was selling. It's not very clear as to what you can sell on Etsy and I tried my best to follow Etsy's policies. I did not try to relist items, somehow game the system or repeat any violations. As a longtime seller I wasn't trying to break any rules so I tried to reach out to Etsy to resolve any issues I may have encountered, but I was not able to get any help. I was left to myself to figure out what I could and could not sell, but if I made a mistake I would receive a strike.

Finally, Etsy permanently suspended my seller account and there was nothing I could do. I tried reaching out to seller support, high-level people, Etsy leadership and except for a couple of automated responses, I was not able to get any help. I don't believe I should have been suspended, especially after 8 years of being a good seller. All I wanted to do was communicate with someone to resolve my case, but I was not able to get anyone's attention.

If you're selling on Etsy or any other online marketplace, I suggest you start your own online store as soon as possible. You never know when these marketplaces will shut you down, so it's best to be in control as much as possible. I suggest creating your online store with Shopify.
