Is insurance a complete waste of money? If you have insurance and never need to claim then YES. However, should you need to claim on your policy this becomes invaluable.

The challenge then is to work out an appropriate amount of money to invest in your peace of mind as there is a chance that these premiums could be completely wasted.

I absolutely love insurance as you may have worked out. The nature of insurance though is that there is a gamble that you make by either having or not having cover.

The gamble of having insurance is that you spend money on premiums and never need to claim on the benefits. This is in some ways a good thing as you have not suffered any major injury/illness however from a financial perspective, you are out of pocket.

The gamble of not having insurance is that should anything happen to you, there is no backup plan in place and you need to fund any medical bills/other expenses yourself.

The challenge then is to find the balance between the two. In this video, I have explained my philosophy and also built a tool to help you do this (See link below).
